TEAK

Teak is one of the few woods in the world which repels water, keeping it from warping, cracking or becoming brittle. The same resins and oils in teak that protect against weather also serve as repellents against insects like termites and marine borers. Outdoor timbers change over time. Although teak contains its natural oil which protects and weather resistant properties, however the teak surfaces will gradually change to a soft, silver-grey colour as the pigments in the surface layer of the wood begin to fade away if left untreated. Teak can also show cracks, especially in the end grains naturally without detracting from the timber’s strength or durability in any way. Regular minimal maintenance is recommended to keep its natural beauty, even as its ages. We recommend weathering your newly bought teak furniture for 2 weeks outside and notice the colour would turn to a gorgeous and unique honey brown appearance naturally. It is also recommended to leave extension tables fully extended as much as possible during the first twelve months of outdoor exposure. This will ensure even weathering of all surfaces to the silver-grey appearance.

DEEP CLEANING

Clean and brighten the new or grey wood or wood surface treated with teak-oil with Golden Care Teak and Hardwood Cleaner. Cover the ground under your working area before cleaning. First moisten the furniture with water. Shake Teak Cleaner before use. Apply Teak Cleaner with a soft cloth or sponge. Allow to soak for 3 minutes. Brush the furniture cleans with a scrubbing pad in the direction of the grain. Rinse off with plenty of water and allow the teak to dry well. Careful fine sanding along the grain may be applied using fine-grit sandpaper in case of heavy soiling, to remove bird droppings and any raised grain and restore a smooth finish to the surface. For prolonged colour, leave the furniture to dry and treat with Teak Protector. Do not use high pressure washer on Teak furniture. Do not use chlorine bleach which can damage wood fibers.

MAINTENANCE

Clean the surfaces and sand off any existing finishes. Apply Golden Care Teak Protector on the 100% air-dried and free of dust surfaces to maintain the honey-brown colour of teak for a longer time and to prevent black spots. If cleaned wood feels rough, sand lightly before treating with Protector. Shake and stir Teak Protector at least a minute before use. Insufficient shaking can lead to uneven weathering. We suggest you try the Teak Protector on a small area first (e.g. the back of a leg) to judge if the colour meets your expectations. Apply a very thin layer of Teak Protector evenly over the furniture with a dust free cloth. Apply a second very thin coat after 30 minutes drying time. It is recommended that you treat your furniture with Teak Protector at least once a year depends on the climate conditions of your location. After applying the Teak Protector, we strongly recommend treating the surface with Golden Care Teak and Hardwood Shield to prevent stains. Do not apply teak oil on an unclean surface otherwise dirt particles could be rubbed into the wood grains during the treatment. Avoid placing teak outdoor furniture in puddles or waterlogged areas for extended life.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: After a period of time teak can show cracks, especially in the end grains. These are quite natural and do not detract from the timber's strength or durability. Also, the static is not affected in any way. Usually the cracks may only be recognized during excessive heat or intense exposure to sunlight as well as during low levels of humidity. In contrast, the crack is almost closed or can hardly be recognized during high levels of humidity and rain. Thus, no moisture can penetrate during winter.
